The Maldives Police Service has initiated a comprehensive counter-narcotics operation in the capital Malé, Hulhumalé, and surrounding islands, anticipating a rise in drug and alcohol-related offences during the New Year’s holiday.

This annual surge in consumption and distribution is a key concern for authorities seeking to maintain public safety during the period.

The operation, which began on December 24, 2024, is headed by the Drug Enforcement Department in collaboration with the Hulhumalé Police, Marine Police, and police stations across Kaafu Atoll.

The initiative involves targeted patrolling of Hulhumalé’s lagoon and monitoring cafés and restaurants allegedly engaged in the illegal sale of alcohol.

Authorities have emphasised that strict measures will be enforced against individuals or establishments found to be in violation of the law. This operation reflects the government's commitment to ensuring public safety and upholding regulations during this festive period.

Further updates on the progress of this operation are expected as it continues over the coming days.
