The Maldives Customs Service has seized 582kg of shark and ray meat intended for illegal export.

In a statement shared on X, Customs confirmed that the seized items were destroyed on December 22, 2024.

This is not the first instance of such activity, as previous operations have also resulted in the seizure and destruction of shark and ray meat, along with the arrest of individuals involved in illegal fishing practices.

The export of sharks and rays is prohibited under the International Trade Controls on Endangered Species Act.

Individuals found guilty of violating this law face fines ranging from MVR 5,000 to MVR 500,000, along with the possibility of criminal charges.
