Parliament Member for the Central Hithadhoo constituency, Ahmed Azaan Marzooq, has expressed confidence in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to safeguard the independence and sovereignty of the Maldives.

Speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, MP Azaan highlighted recent constitutional amendments introduced by the current Administration as evidence of this commitment.

According to MP Azaan, these changes ensure that any alterations to Maldivian territory require the explicit approval of both Parliament and the people through direct consent.

He noted that, in the past, the constitution lacked safeguards, allowing the president to exercise unilateral authority over territorial matters.

Highlighting the territorial dispute involving the Chagos Archipelago as a cautionary example, he underscored the consequences of such constitutional gaps. MP Azaan emphasised that the recent amendments address these vulnerabilities, serving as a crucial step in preventing any future government from compromising the nation's sovereignty.
