The Government has commenced discussions on two significant legislative proposals: the Personal Data Protection Bill and the Cybersecurity Bill, both aimed at safeguarding personal data and enhancing digital security across the Maldives.

Jointly organised by the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) and the Digital Maldives for Adaptation, Decentralisation, and Diversification project under the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, the two-day consultation is being held with input from government agencies, private sector partners, and a special team from the World Bank, which funded the project.

In his opening remarks, Minister of State for Homeland Security and Technology, Mohamed Kinanath, highlighted the bills’ objectives of establishing a strong framework to protect citizens' personal data and ensuring the safety of digital systems.

He noted the critical need for cooperation from all stakeholders to pass these bills, fostering a secure digital environment that empowers citizens and protects sensitive information. Deputy Minister Abdulla Hussain presented the Personal Data Protection Bill, while NCIT and the National Cybersecurity Agency (NCSA) led discussions, with the Cybersecurity Bill set to be introduced by NCSA’s CEO, Dr Ahmed Naufal Abdul Hadi, in the following sessions.

State Minister Kinanath expressed gratitude to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Minister Ali Ihsan for their support and visionary approach to technology. With contributions from the World Bank team, participants exchanged insights on the legislation, with hopes of building a safer, data-protected digital future in the Maldives.
