The Maldives has developed its first-ever Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy, reflecting President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's commitment to disaster preparedness, according to Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef.
Speaking at the 'Resilient 20' (Viluntheri 20) exhibition at the National Art Gallery, the Vice President emphasised how Islamic guidance helped the nation recover from the 2004 tsunami. He praised the unity demonstrated by Maldivians, security forces, and volunteers during the crisis.
The Vice President officially launched the 'Maldives Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy 2024-2030' book at the ceremony, which had been approved by the National Disaster Management Council on December 24. He also participated in various activities, including viewing a special song performance and touring the exhibition.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), established in response to the tsunami, organised the exhibition marking the 20th anniversary of the disaster. The 2004 tsunami, which struck at 9:23 am on Sunday, December 26, remains the Maldives' most severe natural disaster, resulting in 82 deaths and displacing over 29,000 people across the island nation.
