Young athlete Aishath Himna Hassan has been awarded the prestigious BML Sports Scholarship for 2024, recognising her dedication and excellence in athletics.

The Bank of Maldives (BML) announced the scholarship, naming Himna as this year’s recipient. This achievement adds to her illustrious career, marked by her national records in the 200 metres and 400 metres.

As part of the scholarship, Himna will undertake a yearlong training programme at the renowned SprinTec Track Club in Jamaica. Known for producing world-class athletes, the centre offers top-tier coaching and facilities, providing an ideal environment for her development.

The BML Sports Scholarship programme was launched in celebration of the company’s 40th anniversary. Its objective is to support promising athletes in achieving their full potential. In its inaugural year, seven athletes from four sports disciplines completed their training under this initiative.

Himna’s previous accolades include a two-year training scholarship in Jamaica, awarded in 2022 by the Maldives Olympic Committee (MOC) through the International Olympic Council. Such opportunities have been pivotal in her athletic growth.

The Maldives Olympic Committee manages the selection process for the BML Sports Scholarship, ensuring deserving talents are chosen. The programme offers fully funded training at internationally recognised centres, enabling athletes to access the best resources and support.
