Police issue statement on Hulhumalé road accident investigation

Maldives Police Service has issued a statement regarding the ongoing investigation into the road traffic accident involving a police vehicle and a motorcycle. 

The incident occurred on Nirolhu Magu in Hulhumalé Phase 2 during the early hours of December 26, 2024, at approximately 1:50 a.m.

According to the police press release, the collision happened as the police vehicle was crossing Nirolhu Magu via Gul Alaa Magu when it was struck by a motorcycle travelling at high speed. The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at Hulhumalé Hospital. 

Hospital authorities reported that the victim’s condition worsened, and he is now on ventilator support at IGMH as part of ongoing treatment. The individual remains under close medical care.

The police further disclosed that the motorcyclist had violated the Land Transport Act and had his licence suspended on December 21, prior to the accident.

As part of the investigation, authorities are examining whether negligence on the part of the police vehicle’s driver may have contributed to the accident. The police service has assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In their statement, the police described the accident as "deeply disturbing and saddening," emphasising their commitment to road safety. They highlighted the significant resources being allocated to prevent such incidents and promote safer driving practices.
