Maldives Customs Service has initiated an investigation following the unauthorised release of goods from a bonded warehouse without prior knowledge or approval from the authorities.
In a statement on 'X', Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, highlighted longstanding concerns regarding the operation of bonded warehouses in residential properties across the capital. These warehouses, often located in houses and apartments, typically have dual locks, with keys managed by customs officials. The warehouse at the centre of the investigation was also housed in a residential property.
Minister Ihusaan disclosed that the owner of the implicated warehouse had allegedly ceased its intended operations and was using the premises for other purposes. Customs records indicate the presence of goods within the warehouse, and the owner will be required to account for them and pay any applicable duties.
Authorities, including customs officials and police, are collaborating on the investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to take appropriate legal action.
The Minister also emphasised that residential properties are not suitable for maintaining the security and control necessary for bonded warehouses. In response to these challenges, the Government has implemented changes to ensure such facilities are now operated in dedicated, controlled areas under full customs oversight.
