The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy has reported the planting of 450,936 saplings this year under the Five Million Tree Plantation Programme, an initiative aimed at expanding green cover, conserving biodiversity, and reinforcing the resilience of the Maldives' ecosystems.

Launched on World Environment Day, June 5, 2024, the programme represents a flagship commitment of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Administration. Announced during his COP-28 Summit address on December 1, 2023, the President pledged to plant five million trees during his tenure, positioning this initiative as a pivotal component of the Maldives’ environmental strategy.

The programme spans Malé City and various atolls, with a focus on planting a variety of endangered species, shade-providing trees, and 90 types of fruit-bearing plants. On the inaugural day alone, 398,000 trees were planted, showcasing strong community and stakeholder participation.

To further the programme’s reach, the Ministry has received 70 pledges to plant 4,219,456 additional saplings nationwide. This collaborative effort highlights the collective dedication of citizens, organisations, and Government entities toward addressing climate challenges.

By promoting large-scale tree planting, the programme reflects the Maldives’ commitment to tackling the impacts of climate change and preserving its natural heritage for future generations.
