The Ministry of Social and Family Development has reported a decrease in the number of individuals requiring state custody.
Through door-to-door visits, the Ministry is assessing the living conditions of citizens and identifying those in need of support.
Key programmes like IBAMA, along with social mentoring and the ‘Haalu Kihineh?’ initiative, are providing vital assistance to families facing difficult circumstances. These initiatives have contributed to reducing the need for state care and improving the well-being of those in critical conditions.
Speaking to local media, Akram Hussain, Lead Social Worker at the Ministry, highlighted that while social issues persist, there is an increasing awareness among the public about domestic violence and child abuse. The Ministry’s efforts have helped foster greater public understanding and engagement with these issues.
The IBAMA programme, which has been implemented in over 140 islands, allows social workers to monitor the conditions of families closely. The initiative has been instrumental in reducing the number of individuals requiring state intervention, with ongoing assistance provided to those in vulnerable situations. The Ministry plans to expand the programme to all islands by June next year.
Deputy Minister for Social and Family Development, Mariyam Lahufa, noted that the information gathered from these programmes will help the Government tailor policies to meet the specific needs of each community. By understanding the unique challenges faced by different areas, the Ministry can better address local requirements.
Additionally, the Ministry has been addressing food insecurity, providing care packages to 19 families in need between May and December this year. This effort is part of the broader strategy to support families facing economic hardship.
The programme, which has been implemented across 13 atolls, has received positive feedback, with the Ministry continuing to expand its reach throughout the country. Through these initiatives, the Ministry is working to reduce reliance on state care while enhancing community well-being.
