The number of Maldivians participating in the Umrah pilgrimage this December reached a record high, with over 6,373 individuals traveling to Saudi Arabia.
This represents a 44.7 per cent increase compared to December 2023, and 2022 when 4,403 Maldivians performed the pilgrimage during November and December.
The significant rise is attributed to the growing trend of families undertaking the journey during school holidays, with more children and young adults participating.
The cooler weather in Mecca during this period has also been a factor, making the rituals more manageable and comfortable for pilgrims.
The pilgrimage sites in Mecca and Madinah saw large crowds as worshippers from around the globe gathered to perform Umrah prayers.
Despite the influx, Maldivian pilgrims reported relatively smooth experiences, supported by well-organised arrangements for travel, accommodation, and rituals.
Organisers ensured that logistical challenges, such as locating missing group members, were promptly resolved.
The Traveller Group, a key organiser of Umrah trips, facilitated the journey for 600 Maldivians this December. They and other operators were commended for providing comprehensive travel packages that included satisfactory lodging and meal arrangements, ensuring a hassle-free experience for participants.
The efforts of the government and private sector to improve the quality and availability of Umrah travel services have been instrumental in achieving this milestone.
The increase in Umrah pilgrims reflects the strengthened religious commitment of Maldivians. This growth emphasises the enduring spiritual devotion of Maldivian families and the pivotal role of Umrah as a cultural and religious tradition.
It also marks a notable achievement for the nation’s efforts to facilitate and enhance opportunities for religious pilgrimages.
