A 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Indian Ocean's Carlsberg Ridge region today, approximately 912 kilometres southwest of Malé, the Maldives Meteorological (MET) Office has confirmed.
The earthquake occurred at 1:38 p.m. and did not pose any danger to the Maldives, the Met Office stated. Due to the quake's low intensity, no tsunami warning was issued.
The Carlsberg Ridge is a tectonically active area situated between the Gulf of Aden and Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean. It is known for seismic activity due to the divergent boundary between the African and Indian plates.
Earthquakes in this region, like elsewhere along tectonic boundaries, are caused by the movement of tectonic plates. Stress builds up due to plate interactions and is released as seismic energy, leading to earthquakes. The Maldives, located on the aseismic Maldive Ridge, is generally not prone to significant seismic activity.
The Maldives Meteorological Service continues to monitor seismic events in the region and advises that there is no cause for concern regarding this recent earthquake.
