The Maldives' national airline, Maldivian, is organising an airshow on Monday, January 6, 2025, to introduce its first wide-body aircraft, the Airbus A330.
The event is set to take place from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., with viewing locations set at the eastern beaches of Hulhumalé Phase 1 and Phase 2, and Usfasgandu area in Malé City.
The Airbus A330, capable of carrying up to 275 passengers, marks a significant milestone in the airline’s history, enabling direct long-haul flights to destinations in China, South Africa, and Europe. This is expected to enhance connectivity and contribute to the Maldives' growing tourism sector.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the arrival of the wide-body aircraft last month at the event marking the first anniversary of his Administration, stating that it aligns with the Government’s vision to strengthen the aviation industry and expand international travel options.
Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen previously confirmed that Maldivian plans to operate flights to seven new destinations, including three cities in China, Johannesburg in South Africa, and three cities in Europe. This expansion aims to increase tourist arrivals by an estimated 60,000 annually.
Historically, the airline operated Airbus planes for international routes but relied on transit stops due to limited range. The addition of the Airbus A330 resolves this issue, allowing for non-stop long-haul flights. Currently, Maldivian’s fleet consists of 24 aircraft, including one Airbus A320, four ATR planes, six Dash aircraft, and 11 Twin Otters, with the A320 used primarily for international travel.
