The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an advisory, calling on the public to take precautionary steps to prevent flooding as heavy rains and rough weather conditions sweep across the Maldives.

The advisory follows a weather alert from the Maldives Meteorology Service (MET Office), which has warned of torrential rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching up to 45 mph. A yellow alert has been issued for areas spanning Vaavu Atoll to Dhaalu Atoll, remaining in effect until 12:30 am on January 2, 2025.

In light of the forecast, the NDMA is urging residents to act swiftly to safeguard their homes and belongings. Recommendations include moving valuables to higher or safer ground to prevent water damage and switching off electrical appliances that are not in use to avoid potential hazards. The authority has also advised communities to be prepared for possible sea swells, which may exacerbate flooding risks in low-lying areas.

The MET Office has attributed the adverse weather to a cyclone forming southeast of Sri Lanka, accompanied by a low-pressure trough. These conditions are expected to result in rough seas, further heightening the need for caution in affected regions.

With the New Year holiday coinciding with the deteriorating weather, NDMA emphasised the importance of vigilance and preparation.

"Simple but effective measures, such as securing valuables and ensuring electrical safety, can significantly minimise risks to both property and personal safety," the agency stated.

As the Maldives braces for challenging weather conditions, residents are urged to remain alert and prioritise safety to navigate the days ahead.
