Severe flooding has hit Malé City streets and residential buildings following heavy rainfall since late morning, with the southwestern district of Maafannu particularly affected.
The MNDF Fire and Rescue Service has deployed 11 pumps across three districts, while MNDF Malé Area Command personnel assist affected households.
The City Council and Maldives Police Service are working together to place sandbag flood barriers across various areas. MNDF reports they are currently draining water from three areas using nine pumps.
The severe weather system has wreaked havoc across the Maldives in the past 24 hours. Multiple islands are experiencing flooding and dangerous tidal surges, with Sh. Narudhoo and R. Ingraidu struck by powerful storm surges. N. Narudhoo has suffered extensive structural damage to coastal infrastructure and properties from exceptionally strong tidal waves.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has issued a severe weather advisory, urging maritime vessels to exercise extreme caution. They strongly advise against non-essential sea travel until conditions improve, as rough seas and strong winds pose significant navigation risks.
