President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has approved amendments to the regulations of The Maldives Hajj Corporation Limited in response to the demand and long waitlists for Hajj pilgrimage registrations.
The changes, which take effect this year, aim to prioritise fairness and offer a chance for those who have not yet undertaken the sacred journey.
The revised rules were approved following discussions, during a Cabinet meeting on January 5, following a proposal by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. They introduce specific criteria for the allocation of Hajj slots.
Under the new regulations, individuals performing Hajj for the first time will receive priority, reflecting a commitment to ensuring more Maldivians can partake in this spiritual experience. Additionally, a portion of the Hajj quota will now be reserved for those aged 65 and older who have yet to perform the pilgrimage. For pilgrims aged 75 and above, a caretaker may accompany them, with preference given to family members who are first-time pilgrims. In cases where no suitable family member is available, caretakers who have previously performed Hajj may be considered, subject to a health assessment by a Corporation-appointed physician.
The amendments also introduce restrictions on repeat pilgrimages, requiring individuals who have already performed Hajj to wait at least five years before reapplying under the Corporation's care. However, staff members of the Maldives Hajj Corporation will be exempt from these new criteria.
These amendments aim to alleviate difficulties by ensuring a more equitable distribution of slots, while also addressing the needs of the elderly and those requiring special assistance.
A significant amount of Maldivians aspire to undertake the pilgrimage, making it clear that sustained efforts are necessary to secure lasting improvements.
For many Maldivians, the journey to Makkah is more than a religious obligation; it is a deeply cherished dream. The hope is that these measures will bring that dream closer to reality for those who have been waiting, even as work continues to address the challenges facing the Hajj registration process.
