Maldivian pilgrims at Umrah --

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a health advisory for the Maldivian pilgrims who performed Umrah this year, urging them to take precautions against viral fevers and common colds.

HPA advised pilgrims to take several preventive measures to protect themselves and others. These include covering their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, properly disposing of used tissues, and frequently washing their hands with soap and water. Pilgrims are also encouraged to wear masks when travelling and to avoid public gatherings if they experience fever or persistent coughing.

The agency also emphasised the need for caution when visiting vulnerable individuals, such as children and the elderly, advising pilgrims to refrain from contact if they feel unwell. Should symptoms such as fever, cough, chest pain, or difficulty breathing arise within 14 days of returning from Makkah, pilgrims are urged to seek medical attention promptly and inform healthcare providers of their recent travel.

HPA also highlighted the importance of staying hydrated, getting sufficient rest, and avoiding medication other than paracetamol unless prescribed by a doctor. These measures aim to reduce the risk of illness and prevent the spread of infections within the community.

This year, a record 6,373 people performed Umrah pilgrimage, the highest recorded number in recent years.
