Tourism Ministry has revealed that the Maldives expanded its tourism capacity in 2024 with the addition of over 1,600 new beds, reflecting steady growth in the country's hospitality sector.
According to the latest statistics from the Ministry, the Maldives' operational tourism capacity grew from 61,602 beds at the end of 2023 to 63,248 beds in 2024, reflecting an increase of 1,646 beds.
A significant portion of this growth was driven by the expansion of guesthouse accommodations. In 2023, guesthouses offered 13,609 beds, and by the end of 2024, this number rose to 15,621, reflecting an increase of 2,012 beds.
The current breakdown of the 63,248 tourism beds in the Maldives reveals that 67.27 per cent are from 172 resorts, 24.7 per cent of the beds are provided by 929 guesthouses. Meanwhile, 4.83 per cent of the capacity comes from 155 safaris, catering to niche tourism experiences, and 3.21 per cent is offered by 15 hotels.
This expansion aligns with the steady rise in tourist arrivals. For the first time in its history, the Maldives welcomed 2 million tourists in 2024.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Government aims to build on this momentum by increasing tourist arrivals by 15 per cent and boosting tourism revenue to USD 5 billion.
