Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said the introduction of PayPal services will make it easier for more international digital wallets and payment platforms to enter the Maldivian market.
Minister Saeed made the remarks during the 12th episode of Trade Desk with ANA, where he discussed the launch of PayPal services in the Maldives.
The minister said expanding access to international business platforms was one of the priorities highlighted by the public during the 2023 presidential election campaign. He added that the successful introduction of PayPal within two years of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu taking office marked a significant milestone in the Government's digital transformation efforts.
Highlighting the opportunities created through PayPal, Minister Saeed said such services are increasingly important as the global economy becomes more digitally connected. He noted that the launch of PayPal would strengthen confidence in the Maldives as a destination for international financial technology services and help facilitate the introduction of similar platforms in the future.
He added that PayPal's arrival will contribute to greater integration of the Maldives' financial system with international payment gateways and digital wallets.
The minister also revealed that more than 400 vendors registered under the Authentic Maldives initiative are already active on Alibaba's online marketplace. He said the introduction of PayPal would make it easier for Maldivian businesses to market and sell products on international platforms, providing access to a reliable payment solution for cross-border transactions.
