The Malé Taxi Line service has commenced operations in Vilimalé.
The service was officially launched by Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed at a ceremony held in Vilimalé. The launch was attended by MTCC Managing Director DCP (Retd) Ahmed Saudhee, Vilimalé MP Mohamed Ismail and other senior Government officials.
Four environmentally friendly vehicles will initially be used to provide the service in Vilimalé. According to MTCC, the vehicles come in two different sizes to cater to varying transport needs.
The taxi line was introduced under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's initiative to address long-standing concerns over the shortage of taxi services in the Greater Malé Region. MTCC has stated that the service will improve transport options for Vilimalé residents and make travel within the island more convenient.
Speaking at the ceremony, MD Saudhee said the service was launched in response to concerns raised by residents regarding transport accessibility. He noted that passengers can book rides through the Malé Taxi Line application or by calling the dedicated hotline 1655.
He also said the introduction of the taxi service would complement, rather than replace, the existing bus service. He noted that buses would continue operating on routes where they are most effective, while taxis would provide additional access and convenience for residents.
The Malé Taxi Line, which operates 24 hours a day, was first launched in Malé and Hulhumalé on 2 April. The service now operates in Malé, Hulhumalé and Vilimalé.
