In a significant development for the Binveriya scheme, China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) has been entrusted with constructing essential infrastructure in Gulhifalhu.
The agreement, marking a pivotal step in urban development efforts, was formalised at a ceremony held at the President’s Office today.
The partnership will see CMEC undertake the development of critical facilities, including roads and municipal buildings, to serve the growing community in Gulhifalhu.
Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib represented the Maldivian Government in signing the contract, while CMEC’s Regional General Manager, Qian Haojun, signed on behalf of the Chinese firm. The agreement stems from a memorandum of understanding (MoU) established during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to China in 2024.
The project encompasses an array of vital infrastructure initiatives aimed at modernising the urban landscape. Developments include establishing an electricity distribution network, implementing comprehensive water and sanitation facilities, setting up a de-watering system, and upgrading roads to improve connectivity. Additional efforts will focus on installing an advanced telecommunications ducting system and creating a gas storage and distribution network, all integral to supporting a modern, self-sustaining urban hub.
Qian Haojun expressed CMEC’s dedication to the project, noting the company’s longstanding partnership with the Maldives. With over 14 years of active involvement in the country’s development, CMEC has delivered projects that have left a lasting impact.
