Twenty-four Maldivian Umrah pilgrims are currently stranded in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, after Al-Hijra Group failed to secure their return flights despite charging MVR 28,500 per person for the pilgrimage package.
The Maldives Hajj Corporation has stepped in to assist the stranded individuals, with their team in Makkah already providing support to the affected pilgrims. Mohamed Shakeel, the Corporation's Managing Director, announced on social media platform X that they are making necessary arrangements for the pilgrims' repatriation.
Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced that authorities will investigate and take action against Al-Hijra Group over the incident. The Minister emphasised that the Government would not remain passive when Maldivian citizens face difficulties, citing President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's directive for officials to work closely with citizens to resolve their issues.
Al-Hijra Group acknowledged in a Facebook statement that whilst the pilgrims have completed their religious duties, financial difficulties have prevented them from arranging return flights. The company admitted they have not yet found a solution to the situation. Despite the ongoing crisis, the group continues to advertise and promote Umrah trips for the upcoming Ramadan month.
