Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has stated that fishermen in Huvadhu Atoll are now enjoying improved livelihoods and greater satisfaction due to the Government's efforts.

Speaking on MMTV Bodu Khabaru programme about President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to Huvadhu atoll, Minister Shiyam noted that the current Administration inherited significant challenges in the fishing industry but has since implemented transformative measures to address them.

Minister Shiyam highlighted key initiatives undertaken by the Government, such as the introduction of a fishermen's register and improved access to loans and financial resources through better integration with the banking system.

Additionally, the Government has ensured quicker payments for weighed fish, now processed within 48 hours, and implemented arrangements to provide fuel at MIFCO centres at the same price as in Malé City.

The Minister emphasised that these changes have been warmly welcomed by fishermen in Huvadhu atoll and noted that these initiatives have alleviated financial burdens and are expected to encourage more individuals to join the sector.
