The State Electric Company (STELCO) Managing Director Hussain Fahmy has revealed that two high-voltage transformers in Hulhumalé Phase 2 were subjected to deliberate vandalism earlier today, causing widespread power disruptions in the area.

In a post on X, Fahmy detailed how the perpetrators managed to breach security measures, including boundary walls and double-locked enclosures, before tampering with the high-voltage system.

"The methodical nature of the attack suggests the culprits possess technical knowledge of transformer systems and operations," Fahmy wrote, expressing grave concern over the incident.

He emphasised the severe risks associated with such interference, warning that tampering with critical infrastructure could result in electrocution, serious injury, or death – not only for the perpetrators but also for nearby residents.

Fahmy also drew parallels to last year's transformer-related deaths, calling them a stark reminder of the dangers associated with infrastructure tampering, and emphasised the urgent need for increased public vigilance and stronger protective measures.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with STELCO implementing additional security measures to prevent future occurrences.
