The Member of Parliament for the Hoarafushi constituency, Ali Moosa, has expressed concerns about the current approach of opposition political parties in the Maldives, emphasising the need for constructive political engagement.
Speaking on MMTV Bodu Khabaru programme, MP Ali Moosa noted that opposition parties appear to focus on fostering divisions among the public rather than promoting the country’s best interests.
Citing the Anti-Defection Act as an example, Ali Moosa explained that the bill was initially passed with strong support from the opposition, who described it as a necessary constitutional amendment. However, following the inclusion of the amendment into the Constitution by the current administration, opposition members have begun to criticise it.
The MP further remarked that while opposition parties protest in the name of defending the Constitution, they often fail to clarify which constitutional articles they are defending or the reasons behind their stance. He stressed that the recent constitutional amendments are designed to empower citizens, enhance national security, and maintain peace and order.
Additionally, MP Ali Moosa highlighted that political parties have a responsibility to actively participate in democratic processes, such as elections, to strengthen the country’s political framework. Instead, he observed, the opposition has chosen to focus on creating discord rather than engaging in by-elections.
