The stormwater pump station located at the Maafannu cemetery has been repaired and temporarily brought back into operation.

In a statement, the Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure explained that the drainage networks had been inspected, and the pump station was temporarily restored to operation with assistance from Road Development Corporation Limited and STELCO.

According to Minister of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, the damage to the pump station was due to negligence by the contractor responsible for excavation work in the area.

Minister Dr Muththalib criticised the contractor for irresponsibly proceeding with excavation work for a parking building project in September 2024 without informing the Ministry, resulting in damage to the pump station.

The Maafannu cemetery drainage system, installed eight years ago by the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), was designed to mitigate road flooding in the area.

Whenever flooding occurs in the city due to heavy rains, the Ministry routinely inspects drainage stations across Malé to ensure they are functioning properly. However, the damage to the pump station and its connected pipes has been deemed beyond repair, raising concerns about long-term solutions for the site.
