Maldives and Estonia forge historic diplomatic ties in landmark visit

Maldives and Estonia have embarked on a new chapter of diplomatic relations as President Dr Mohamed Muizzu made the first-ever visit by a Maldivian head of state to the Baltic nation.
During talks in Tallinn with Estonian President Dr Alar Karis on Monday, the two leaders prioritised cooperation in digital governance, cybersecurity and climate action, while exploring fresh avenues for collaboration in tourism and education.
Following the meeting, in a post on X, President Dr Muizzu emphasised the importance of solidarity and unity between small states, noting their crucial role in global peace, security, sovereignty and sustainable development.
He expressed particular interest in Estonia's expertise in renewable energy and smart grid technologies, viewing them as potential models for enhancing environmental resilience in the Indian Ocean archipelago.
President Dr Alar Karis welcomed the opportunity to strengthen bilateral partnerships. The two heads of state also addressed international security concerns and pledged to work together on shared multilateral priorities.
In his social media post, President Dr Muizzu also praised the excellent hospitality and heartfelt welcome he received during the historic diplomatic engagement.
