Authorities have installed over 3,500 sandbags across Male’ city as part over a coordinated effort to prepare for expected heavy rainfalls.
This initiative, led by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the Maldives Police Service (MPS), and the Male' City Council, aims to minimise the damage from potential flooding in the region.
The installation of sandbags comes ahead of a cyclonic system moving towards the archipelago from the west of the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to bring significant rainfall in the coming days.
During the past 24 hours, the MNDF has installed 1,033 sandbags, while the Male' City Council has distributed over 2,500. The MPS has also contributed to the operation, ensuring that vulnerable areas are well protected.
This initiative follows efforts by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), which carried out operations earlier this month to help residents affected by flooding in Male' City. In collaboration with the Ministry of Cities, Local Governance and Public Works, the NDMA has continued distributing sandbags to protect homes.
Authorities have stressed that these proactive measures are critical in minimising the damage from the cyclone and safeguarding the public from the expected severe weather. A special task force, under the president's direction, has been established, comprising MNDF, MPS, and NDMA to ensure swift and coordinated action in the coming days.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a yellow alert for torrential rain and thunderstorms, with gusty winds of up to 40 mph expected. The alert will be in effect from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on January 14, 2025, covering the area from Raa Atoll to Thaa Atoll.
As the storm approaches, authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions and follow official guidance to stay safe during the storm.
