Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal has announced that the Government is advancing efforts to develop harbours in three regions specifically for cruise ships.

This was revealed during a local news interview, where Minister Faisal highlighted the Administration's commitment to enhancing cruise ship tourism in the Maldives.

According to Minister Faisal, the project is a collaborative effort between the Government and relevant agencies to address existing challenges and attract more cruise liners to the Maldives. He underscored that this initiative aligns with the Government’s strategy to increase tourist arrivals and strengthen the country’s tourism sector.

Since the start of 2025, over 6000 tourists have travelled to the Maldives aboard cruise ships. Minister Faisal explained that under the previous administration, regulations created significant obstacles for cruise liners, prompting complaints from the Maldives Association of Yacht Agents (MAYA). Following consultations with the association, these guidelines were revised to facilitate smoother operations for visiting cruise ships.

In addition to addressing regulatory hurdles, the Government is focusing on infrastructure development. Surveys are underway in regions such as Addu and Laamu Atoll to assess the feasibility of building harbours or jetties tailored for cruise ships. These developments are expected to enhance the country’s appeal as a destination for cruise tourism.

Minister Faisal reiterated the Administration’s commitment to advancing the cruise tourism sector, emphasising that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Government has resolved numerous challenges faced by the industry in the past. The dedicated harbours in the three regions are expected to play a pivotal role in achieving this goal.

Recently the country has seen a surge in cruise ship visits, contributing to a notable increase in tourist numbers. According to MAYA, the target for the current tourism season is to welcome more than 12 cruise ships.
