President returns from Estonia Trip

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has returned to the Maldives after his official visit to the Republic of Estonia which took place from 13 to 16 January.

The trip began with a ceremonial welcome at Kadriorg Presidential Palace, where both leaders inspected a Guard of Honour before engaging in private discussions on strengthening bilateral relations.

President Dr Muizzu conducted extensive talks with Estonian officials, including the Parliament President and the Mayor of Tartu, with Estonian leadership pledging strong support for expanded partnership initiatives with the Maldives.

During the visit, made at Estonian President Alar Karis's invitation, three key Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) were signed, focusing on climate change and environment, political consultation, and digital affairs. They are:

  • MoU between the Government of Maldives and the Government of Estonia on knowledge exchange, cooperation, and support in the fields of climate change, environment, and energy
  • MoU between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia on Political Consultation
  • MoU between the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology of Republic of Maldives and the Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs of the Republic of Estonia

Further to this, supporting his Administration's digital transformation agenda, President Dr Muizzu toured several Estonian tech institutions, including the e-Estonia Briefing Centre and Greenergy Data Centers. He also visited the Estonian Biobank and other cultural facilities to explore broader institutional partnerships.
