Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has introduced a new 140-gram canned tuna product to the market, targeting small households and reducing food wastage.
The new product is 40 grams lighter than MIFCO's previous smallest offering of 180 grams, providing a more economical option for consumers.
A MIFCO spokesperson explained that the smaller size was developed specifically for single-serving consumption in small households, noting that refrigerating leftover canned tuna is not recommended.
Additionally, MIFCO clarified that the product launch will not affect the Government's Ramadan distribution programme – the State Trading Organisation (STO) is set to distribute cases of 180-gram canned tuna to households during Ramadan, upholding President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's pledge. As such, MIFCO added that production of the canned tuna for Ramadan distribution is at 50 per cent completion.
The new 140-gram cans are priced at MVR 15 each, while the 180-gram cans cost MVR 17.50. Wholesale pricing for a case of 48 cans is set at MVR 700 for the 140-gram option and MVR 760 for the 180-gram variety.
MIFCO confirmed that both sizes are now available for wholesale and retail purchase, with the company currently offering only these two variants in their canned tuna range.
