The Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Dr Aishath Shahudha Abdulla, has revealed that proposals have been submitted to bring PayPal, Amazon Pay, and Google Pay to the Maldives; a significant step toward expanding international payment gateways in the country.
Speaking on MMTV's Bodu Khabaru programme, Dr Shahudha emphasised the critical need for these payment solutions to support Maldivian artists and self-employed individuals. She highlighted that formal proposals have already been submitted to PayPal, Amazon Pay, and Google Pay, with discussions actively progressing at the executive management level within the respective companies.
The Deputy Minister further stated that additional measures are being explored to address the challenges related to payment solutions.
Highlighting recent progress in payment gateway systems, Dr Shahudha referenced the integration of WeChat Pay into the Bank of Maldives’ (BML) Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal network in May 2024.
Creating a skilled economy remains a key priority for the Government. This includes empowering Maldivians to create seller accounts on various international platforms, enabling skilled workers to showcase and sell their products globally.
The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, in collaboration with the Business Centre Corporation (BCC), continues to work diligently to build a skilled economy and expand opportunities for Maldivian entrepreneurs.
