President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to establish waste management centres in all islands across the country by the end of the year, based on population distribution.

The initiative aims to enhance waste management services with fully equipped facilities, including essential machinery, infrastructure, and operational support. Additionally, the project is expected to create employment opportunities within local communities.

The President made the announcement during his visit to Haa Alif Ihavandhoo, where he reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to prioritising waste management. He also confirmed that WAMCO has been tasked with overseeing solid waste management in Ihavandhoo, with ongoing efforts to ensure the project's timely completion.

Coordination between the Finance Ministry, Environment Ministry, and WAMCO is actively progressing to finalise staffing and operational requirements, ensuring the service becomes available without delays.

As part of a three-day tour of the North Thiladhunmathi atoll, President Dr Muizzu is scheduled to visit ten islands in the region. Several development projects have been inaugurated during the visit, focusing on infrastructure improvements and community development.

During his stop in Ihavandhoo, the President met with local authorities, including the island council, the women’s development committee, and other Government officials. The discussions aimed to review ongoing initiatives and explore further measures to strengthen development efforts in the area.
