The Maldives and India began discussions on a comprehensive economic and maritime security partnership, with the first consultative meeting of the High-Level Core Group (HLCG) held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This meeting, held on January 29, 2025, marked a crucial step in advancing the bilateral relationship between the two countries, following a vision document agreed upon by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after their October 2024 meeting in India.
The talks focused on six key areas outlined in the vision, including development cooperation, trade and economic relations, digital finance, energy projects, health cooperation, and defense and maritime security. Both nations reviewed their existing collaborations and agreed on the importance of deepening cooperation to foster regional stability and mutual growth.
The meeting marks a step forward in both countries' efforts to strengthen their strategic partnership, focusing on key areas critical to their economic and security concerns. Discussions centred on boosting sustainable development initiatives and enhancing maritime security in the Indian Ocean, a top priority for both nations.
The second meeting of the High-Level Core Group is scheduled to take place in India in April 2025, where further progress will be made on the implementation of the partnership’s objectives.
