President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that progress on the Maldives Economic Gateway project, designated as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Ihavandhippolhu, is expected by mid-year.

The project, which has been a focal point of the Administration’s economic strategy, aims to drive employment and national development.

During his visit to Haa Alif Hoarafushi, the President addressed the local community, emphasising that the initiative differs from previous proposals for Ihavandhippolhu. He highlighted the project’s role in strengthening the economy and generating revenue for the region. Member of Parliament for Hoarafushi, Ali Moosa, speaking on behalf of residents, reiterated the importance of launching economic activities in the area to boost financial stability.

The Government has already commenced preliminary work, with the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade moving forward in line with cabinet decisions. According to estimates, several components of the initiative are expected to be operational before the end of the year.

Ihavandhippolhu, which includes Haa Alif, Thuraakunu, Uligamu, Hoarafushi, Ihavandhoo, and Molhadhoo, is strategically positioned along a key maritime route in the Indian Ocean. Since taking office, President Dr Muizzu’s Administration has undertaken various efforts related to the project, reinforcing its commitment to economic expansion.

This marks the President’s second visit to Hoarafushi since assuming office. He reaffirmed his dedication to addressing the island’s infrastructure needs, including improvements in sports facilities, harbours, roads, education, and healthcare. Member of Parliament, Ali Moosa acknowledged the Government’s efforts over the past year, noting the visible progress in the constituency.

In his address, the President stressed the importance of national stability in fostering economic growth. He reiterated that peace and development must go hand in hand, ensuring that all legally permitted initiatives proceed without disruption. The recent period of stability, he noted, has been instrumental in advancing the country’s development goals.
