A Juvenile Halfway House has been inaugurated in HA. Hoarafushi to provide rehabilitation and support for children involved in criminal activities, with the aim of reintegrating them into society.
The facility, established under the Department of Juvenile Justice, was officially opened by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to HA. Hoarafushi.
The centre, which accommodates both male and female juveniles separately, offers essential treatment and rehabilitation services. Children housed at the facility will receive the necessary care and support before completing their period of detention and returning to the community.
During the opening ceremony, the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan emphasised the importance of such facilities in equipping juveniles with skills and education to help them transition away from crime. While the Juvenile Justice Act mandates the establishment of rehabilitation centres, there has been a lack of such institutions in the country. The newly opened halfway house in Hoarafushi is the first of its kind outside Malé.
Developed by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the project commenced in 2022. It aims to address the gap in rehabilitative services for young offenders, ensuring they receive the necessary guidance and support.
The President's visit to North Thiladhunmathi Atoll, which began on Tuesday, included the inauguration of this facility. He is expected to return to Malé today following the conclusion of his three-day trip.
