The Government has announced plans to construct a 10-storey building for Zakat House to maximise the benefits provided to zakat recipients.

Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed stated that construction is expected to commence this year, with the project aimed at strengthening the zakat system in the country.

Once completed, the building will generate revenue by leasing office spaces to external tenants, with all proceeds directed towards supporting zakat beneficiaries. The Zakat House, a Government-established institution, is responsible for overseeing zakat-related activities, promoting awareness about property zakat, and ensuring proper distribution of funds.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to expand the socio-economic role of zakat and address previous inefficiencies in fund management, where zakat proceeds were used without structured administrative arrangements or effective policies. To improve financial sustainability, Zakat House will formulate clear investment frameworks to ensure long-term benefits for eligible recipients.

The Government is also in the process of drafting a zakat law to further regulate and enhance zakat management. This move aligns with commitments made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during the 2023 presidential election, reinforcing efforts to strengthen the zakat system and maximise its impact.
