The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has introduced stricter safety regulations for fibre-related workplaces, aiming to enhance protection for employees and the public.
Published in the Government Gazette, the new rules impose penalties of up to MVR 2,000 for businesses that fail to comply with the safety standards.
The regulation on safety standards for fibre workplaces grants the HPA the power to inspect premises and enforce compliance. Non-compliant businesses could face fines or be temporarily closed until they meet the required safety measures. Those who resume operations without prior approval from the HPA may face further penalties.
Effective in six months, the regulation requires businesses to obtain an HPA permit and ensure that employees are provided with personal protective equipment (PPE). Regular safety training, including an annual refresher course, is also mandated. Workplaces must be equipped with adequate ventilation, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and designated chemical storage areas.
In addition to these requirements, businesses must implement fire safety training for staff and display clear signage indicating hazards. Smoking, eating, and drinking will be prohibited in fibre work areas.
HPA further said that premises must be secured to prevent access by unauthorised individuals, particularly children and pregnant women, and emergency contact numbers and fire exits must be clearly marked.
