Mohamed Jinan Jaleel, Managing Director of Island Beverages Maldives Private Limited, has expressed concerns over the people of Addu City accepting temporary solutions implemented by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), questioning whether these measures adequately address the city’s long-term development needs.

Speaking on MMTV’s ‘Bodu Khabaru’ programme, Jinan highlighted that MDP has repeatedly made promises to the residents of Addu without fulfilling them. He remarked that during the party’s two terms in power, it had taken advantage of the city’s population, relying on their support without delivering meaningful, long-term improvements.

Despite Addu being a stronghold for MDP in past elections, Jinan pointed out that the results of the recent presidential election indicate a shift in voter sentiment. He attributed this change to dissatisfaction among Addu residents, who he said have grown frustrated with the lack of substantial development initiatives. According to Jinan, the MDP’s reliance on temporary solutions to garner votes has contributed to this decline in support.

He also noted that had former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih effectively addressed the city’s concerns, the election results might have been different. In contrast, he stated that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has shown a commitment to Addu both before and after assuming office. While acknowledging that the financial impact of the new Administration’s efforts may not yet be visible, he indicated that specific services are being directed towards the city’s residents.

Jinan further criticised the handling of Addu’s power supply issues, stating that frequent power cuts have persisted due to the previous administration’s inaction. He also referenced the deteriorating condition of the city’s nature park, attributing its decline to the lack of attention from the former government. Although steps are now being taken to resolve the ongoing electricity crisis, he cautioned that solutions will take time to yield results.

As the new Administration moves forward, Jinan suggested that a more consistent and dedicated approach is necessary to ensure sustainable improvements in Addu City, rather than relying on temporary measures that fail to address long-term needs.
