The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has reported a 6 per cent increase in international flights arriving at Velana International Airport (VIA) in 2024, with a total of 16,830 flights recorded. This marks a notable rise compared to 2023, when the airport handled 15,883 international flights.
According to MMA’s monthly economic figures, both scheduled and general flights contributed to this growth. Scheduled flights rose from 14,608 in 2023 to 15,432 in 2024, reflecting a year-over-year increase of 5.6 per cent. General flights, which include chartered flights and private jets, also saw an uptick, with 1,398 arrivals in 2024—an increase of 9.6 per cent compared to the previous year.
The surge in international flights coincided with a rise in the number of foreign airlines operating in the Maldives, further strengthening the country’s aviation connectivity.
In 2024, the Maldives welcomed 2.04 million tourists, with visitors staying an average of 7.7 days. Tourism bednights also saw an increase, highlighting the sector’s continued growth.
Looking ahead, the Government has set an ambitious target of attracting nearly 2.5 million tourists in 2025. The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), has outlined extensive promotional activities to support this goal.
