The Maldivian Government is embarking on an ambitious digital transformation following a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on February 2, 2025.
Led by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, the initiative aims to overhaul the country's Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector, boosting national productivity and accelerating the digital economy.
The approved framework focuses on enhancing technology governance, maximising the benefits of the digital economy for Maldivians, and fostering innovation in the ICT sector. Key initiatives include modernising regulations, creating an ‘Interoperable Open Data Sharing Platform’ to ensure seamless data exchange, and centralising Government data for a unified ‘Single Source of Truth.’
The plan also includes expanding e-Government services, establishing a National Sovereign Cloud for secure data management, and implementing e-Faas, a secure electronic identification system. Additionally, the Government will integrate technology into school curricula, provide training in emerging technologies, and establish a research and innovation fund.
A ‘Local First’ policy will prioritise Maldivian companies and professionals for ICT and technology services, while the creation of an Innovation Hub will support the development of innovative technological solutions.
During the Cabinet meeting, ministers discussed strategies and set timelines for these initiatives, marking a decisive step toward a digitally advanced Maldives.
