The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Maldives has raised concerns over the increase in waste generated during annual Ramadan cleaning activities, noting that waste is often left on roadsides and sidewalks, creating environmental and public health hazards.
According to the EPA, not only do Ramadan cleanups contribute to the accumulation of waste, but many households and businesses also dispose of their trash improperly by leaving it on public roads. This practice results in unsightly streets, environmental pollution, and difficulties for pedestrians and commuters.
The EPA cautioned that improper waste disposal poses serious health risks and urged the public to avoid dumping garbage on roads, in abandoned buildings, and in public spaces. The agency advised individuals conducting Ramadan cleanups to coordinate with authorised waste management companies or the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) in advance to ensure proper collection and disposal of waste.
Furthermore, the EPA reminded the public that transporting and disposing of waste in a manner that pollutes the environment is illegal under the Waste Management Act. The agency called on all citizens to contribute to maintaining clean and healthy surroundings.
