President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to advancing women’s empowerment, stating that ensuring equal opportunities for women remains a top priority.

Delivering the Presidential Address at the opening session of the Parliament, he outlined several key initiatives aimed at supporting women in business, leadership, and social welfare.

The President highlighted the Government's introduction of a MVR 100 million Lui Loan scheme in 2024, specifically designed to support women entering the business sector. He announced that 60 loans have already been disbursed in the first phase of the programme and noted that 25 per cent of the scheme is reserved for women with disabilities. The President confirmed that the second phase of the scheme will be launched later this year.

In a move to strengthen support systems for victims of domestic violence, the President announced that domestic violence shelters will be established in three regions of the country, with the first shelter being completed within a year.

Additionally, the President announced that the allowance for Women’s Development Committee (WDC) employees will be converted into a formal salary to promote women’s leadership and participation.
