Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has stated that the newly introduced electric vehicle (EVs) taxi service in Malé will bring a significant transformation to the city’s transport system through modern technology.
Via his official X account following the signing of the agreement with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the Minister stated that the service will be fully environmentally friendly, using 100 per cent electric vehicles (EVs). He also expressed gratitude to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for prioritising policies that enhance public convenience and welfare.
Under the agreement signed between MTCC and the Government, the new EV taxi service will be fully managed through a digital platform, similar to ride-hailing apps used internationally. The system is expected to reduce waiting times, ensure structured pricing, and provide a reliable and accountable taxi service
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Ameen reassured that existing taxi operators will not be negatively impacted, as the service will be designed to integrate seamlessly into the current transport system. He added that the new taxi line will also help address congestion and the long-standing airport taxi queue issue.
The Government aims to introduce the service by mid-year, offering both full-time and part-time drivers the opportunity to register.
