The Government has awarded a contract to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to introduce an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service in Malé, aimed at modernising urban transport and addressing long-standing issues in the taxi system. The service, expected to launch mid-year, will be managed through a software-based system similar to Uber or Grab. The 100 per cent EV fleet is designed to provide a structured, reliable, and environmentally friendly transport solution while creating flexible employment opportunities for full-time and part-time drivers.
