Chief Justice Uz Ahmed Muthasim Adnan has stated that all current judges in the Maldives are working diligently to transform the judiciary into an unbiased, fair institution that commands public trust.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the 'Judicial Year 2025' on Tuesday night, the Chief Justice emphasised that judges are fulfilling their pledges through tireless effort, with the fairness of judicial work reflected in daily court rulings.

In his speech, the Chief Justice explained that judges have pledged to uphold Islam and the Maldivian Constitution while safeguarding people's rights. Their commitment, he added, encompasses carrying out judicial duties with unwavering honesty and trustworthiness. He noted that all 182 judges currently serving in the Maldives are steadfastly working towards this goal, thoughtfully utilising available resources to establish an unbiased judiciary that earns public confidence.

The Chief Justice highlighted how Supreme Court and High Court rulings serve to clarify complex legal matters and provide comprehensive explanations of legal principles. This clarity, he explained, proves invaluable to lower courts, their judges, lawyers and the general public.

He also emphasised that court rulings are now readily accessible to the public through a transparent system.

While acknowledging the space constraints faced by lower courts, he commended their judges for their unwavering dedication. He specifically praised the achievements of the Juvenile Court and Drug Court over the past year, highlighting the latter's successful rehabilitation programme.

Speaking of the rehabilitation programme's success, the Chief Justice revealed that 597 individuals underwent rehabilitation through the Drug Court in the previous year. Of these, 596 were successfully reintegrated into society after treatment – an achievement he deemed remarkable.

Looking to the future, the Chief Justice outlined plans to modernise judicial operations through technology this year. He also announced their commitment to implementing necessary amendments to existing laws and establishing new legislation as required.
