The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised Hajj and Umrah pilgrims departing from the Maldives to complete the required vaccinations at least 14 days before travel.

The recommendation is aimed at safeguarding pilgrims from infectious diseases, as millions of people from around the world gather in Saudi Arabia for the annual pilgrimage. It also seeks to reduce the risk of disease transmission upon their return to the Maldives.

According to the HPA, the mandatory vaccines for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims include the meningococcal conjugate vaccine, influenza vaccine, and oral polio vaccine. The agency has urged all Hajj and Umrah service providers, as well as individual travellers, to ensure vaccinations are completed within the stipulated timeframe.

Additionally, the HPA has recently revised the polio vaccination requirements for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. Under the updated guidelines, individuals who have completed three doses of the polio vaccine during childhood and can provide official documentation are exempt from receiving an additional dose. However, those who did not complete all three doses or are unable to present proof of vaccination are required to receive one dose of the polio vaccine before travel.

The HPA stated that vaccination requirements are based on disease prevalence and transmission risks in the Maldives. The agency also noted that requirements may change depending on advancements in vaccine development and shifts in disease prevalence. Any updates to the vaccination guidelines will be publicly communicated to ensure compliance and health safety.
