The State Trading Organisation (STO) has imported the first batch of coconuts to the Maldives as part of its efforts to provide affordable goods for Maldivians during Ramadan.

The company announced that the coconuts, imported from India, will be available for sale at STO People’s Choice store from Saturday, priced at MVR 5 per coconut.

STO has set the price of coconuts at a significantly lower price than the current market price, which ranges between MVR 10 and MVR 25. The initiative aligns with the Government’s broader efforts to maintain affordability of essential goods during the holy month of Ramadan.

In addition to coconuts, lemons will also be available at STO People’s Choice outlet from Saturday.

As part of its Ramadan preparation, STO has organised imports into four categories, covering basic food items, fresh vegetables and fruits, processed foods, and cooking utensils.

STO emphasised its commitment to ensuring affordable access to essential goods for both the public and businesses, drawing on past experience to improve market stability. The company stated that it closely monitors market prices, identifying items experiencing price surges and implementing swift measures to stabilise costs.
