The National Drug Agency (NDA) is exploring measures to accelerate the enrolment of individuals into drug treatment programmes.
This issue was a central topic of discussion at the recent NDA Board meeting, where members deliberated on strategies to enhance rehabilitation efforts and strengthen support for organisations working in the field.
One of the key areas of focus was the collaborations with NGOs operating in the field. Their vital role in addressing addiction, the Board considered ways to increase institutional support and foster greater collaboration to enhance the effectiveness of their initiatives.
Additionally, discussions were held on expediting the resolution of cases related to drug treatment. The Board also explored the possibility of instructing the Muraaja Committee to take appropriate action against individuals who fail to complete their rehabilitation. If implemented, these measures are expected to reinforce anti-drug operations and expand the availability of treatment services.
Providing further insights into the meeting, NDA Chairperson Lubna Zahir highlighted the urgent need to address the shortage of counsellors, which has posed challenges to the timely admission of individuals into treatment programmes. To address this issue, the Board considered potential solutions, including expanding treatment facilities and identifying alternative methods to enhance service delivery.
As part of an ongoing special anti-drug initiative launched in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, more than 100 individuals have already been admitted into treatment. This programme specifically targets drug users involved in street crimes, those found intoxicated in public spaces, and individuals living on the streets, including those sleeping in mosques.
