The Ministry of Islamic Affairs is set to establish a system for depositing funds intended for charity, donations, gifts and other good causes, in addition to property zakat funds, through the Zakat House.
In a post on their official X account, the Ministry stated that such a system will be set up next week. The purpose is to create a mechanism to direct people's charitable spending to areas in need.
The post highlighted the great need for charitable spending in the Maldives, noting that many islands require resources for mosques and Quran classes. It emphasised the importance of prioritising the positive development of society.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu established the Zakat House on December 18, 2023, with the aim of strengthening the zakat system in the Maldives and developing the Zakat Fund to ensure its benefits reach beneficiaries more broadly. The institution provides debt relief assistance, medical treatment assistance and support in special circumstances.
With the awareness efforts being conducted by the Zakat House, Islamic Affairs Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has previously stated that the past year saw the highest amount of funds collected as zakat. Accordingly, more than MVR 100 million was received as property zakat in 2024.
